Guys, I just purchased HP Tuners from a guy over on the ls1 tech forum and need advice. What computer are you guys using for tuning, and is there a best computer for this? I hope to learn as I go, so is it difficult to use? Thank you.
You don't need any special laptop - any Windows XP or 7 operating system will work just fine assuming the HP Tuners that you bought is USB and not the original serial interface. Make sure you email HP Tuner and request the latest Beta version of their software. They will need you to copy/paste your information file from your HP Tuner and then they will send you a link to download the latest Beta file.
Is it difficult to use? That is a little subjective, depending on your experience with ECM tuning. I would not consider this easy for entry level. But there is a lot of information on HPTuners.com/forum, this forum, and LS1Tech. Search for some tutorials, buy some books, then ask questions and start experimenting with some changes. I will say you have to really want to learn in order to use this software. It takes a lot of time.
I use a $228.00 netbook from walmart lol. works fine for me. Just remember the basic stuff when you tune
Most importantly save your stock/default file and dont save over it. this way if you mess up, you can always go back to it!
Also, the "help" section on your hp tuners software is pretty good.
Speaking of help, there was a fella here on Corvette forum who helped me out BIG TIME with a simple tuning issue which 2 of my tuner friends missed.
When it comes to auto trans tuning, theres a sticky on Hptuners covering the basics of it.
The AFR and spark tuning will probably be a lil intimidating at first but its not too bad. I'm picking up on the basics of that. A wideband is your friend when it comes to tuning your AFR. You can tune your afr based off of the mv reading of your stock sensors but the best way is to use a wideband. I'm not a pro but I'd be more than willing to help you along the way. Don't expect me to do everything for you though lol

Guys, I appreciate your replies. I thought I wasn't going to get a reply. A $228 notebook, here I thought I would need a top of the line lap top or something. 98tadriver I might have to take you up on that offer to help. I am going do some reading over on the HPT forum. I'll definitely email them for the latest Beta version of the software. Hopefully my HP Tuners will get here this week.
