Default Intermittent Limp Mode

2000 C5, 32,000 miles

During the past 6 to 7 years I have had intermittent problems with this car, which seem to be electrical. While driving in any gear or rpm the car would immediately go into limp mode. The digital readout indicates "service the traction control and active handling system". In order to get the car off limp mode I would turn the car off and pull the key out for about 10 seconds, which would reset the computer, and in most cases the car would function normally for a short period of time. Occasionally the engine light would stay on and other times it would stay off until entering limp mode again.

I recently changed out the ECBM brake module (several times now), replacing both the electrical module and the mechanical unit that the 4 brake lines come into. I thought we had the problem solved but the next day the problem with the traction control and active handling reoccurred.

Just recently some of the brakes were chattering as though the anti-lock brake system was activating.

Also for two days my low oil light came on even though the oil was not low.

This doesn't appear to be a common issue, and my local shops and dealership haven't been able to properly diagnosis the problem. Has anyone seen such a problem,or know what I'm up against? I love this car, but I've reached a new level of frustration after a year of troubleshooting and not being able to drive it.

Thanks in advance, any pointers in the right direction will be much appreciated!

What you are describing sounds like a "wheel speed sensor issue"---The wheel speed sensors are used by both the ABS brake system and the traction control system
The ABS to prevent the wheels from skidding on a hard stop--and the TC to prevent the wheels from spinning on a hard launch---Both scenarios will cause a " a reduced power mode" It is very common to have a fouled wheel speed sensor or pigtail on an older car--I would check all 4 --unplug them and clean them and check for broken or frayed wires--- Sometimes even driving on a rough road or going over railroad tracks will cause the sensors to lose contact and pop up a code/reduced power
