I am interested in upgrading my PCM. I understand the Autotap should be used to gain baseline data prior to reprogramming. Question is to whether the PCM reverts to default settings if the electric system goes down as a "dead battery". People from Breathless suggested there was no "downside" to reprogramming the PCM. I have Blackwing, high flow air duct, LS6 intake, headers and Mid America free flow exhaust. Any comments regarding the process would be greatly appreciated.
Once the PCM is reprogrammed (flashed) then it is just like it is in stock condiction. You can disconnect the battery and not lose the program. If you lose the battery actually during the reprogramming process there is a chance the PCM will be screwed. LS1Edit explains these situations and possible recovery technics. I just recieved my LS1Edit last week and have been reading up the procedures.
there are two types of memories in the PCM, one is Flash ROM, and is where the program is stored.. This program is not sensitive to loss of battery power. The other memory areas ARE sensitive to loss of battery power and hold the "live" data, i.e. trims, etc.. This data will be lost but will be relearned while driving after restoration of power... No worries..
Regarding the PCM and battery loss while programming, it can lead to undesirable results, from a car that needs to be reflashed by the dealer, or in the most disasterous case, PCM replacement..
I always ensure a FULL battery charge before attempting programming.. In some cases, I hook up a second power source to make sure battery will be strong...
