Default Tech 2 scan tool help

I just bought a tech 2 and have read the manual a few times but there are a few things I am unclear on.
I got this to read the DTC's off my car. Programming at this point is beyond my scope.
so I connect it to the ALDL connector and I know it is making contact because it powers on using that connection
but when I try to get any information it tells me it cannot communicate with the vehicle
It asks if the key is on or off. I turn the key on and the screen goes blank and freezes

I am using the scan tool because my DIC stopped working so I cannot get any codes from that

you said it reads dtc's but not getting the info you want.what info are you looking for?

the only thing you need to connect it to the vehicle is the dlc cable with the 16/19 adapter for the obd2 port.

try connecting the dlc cable to the tech2 , then connect to the obd2 port , turn ignition to on without starting car , then power on tech2

you might want to just get an elm327 bluetooth scanner and use the torque app.it will probably do what you want and be easier to use.

If your Tech 2 is a “Chinese Clone" your scan tool would be suspect !!...try connecting another one if you can. I’m thinking of buying one as a backup to the one I have but will get a genuine one...probably over a grand for a used real deal one.

GM hides the fuse on all their cars for the OBD2 port on the "cigarette lighter circuit" See if your cig lighter fuse is blown--

Thank you all for the responses. When I connected it the first time I was flipping through the different screens to see what it would do until finally the screen went blank. Then I noticed the battery had less than 10 volts. Bad weather today kept me from going out so I ll look at this tomorrow

I just want to be able to read and correct any DTC's I don't know enough to change a program or have a need to. I got that clone so it would read
the different Modules

if it's possible i would return the tech2 and get the elm and torque app like i mentioned above.it will do everything you want and more and it is cheap.

I too bought a KONNWEI OBD2/EOBD scanner [ KW808 ] I also am getting somewhat the same thing. First of all I get a LINKIN ERROR, also get VEHICLE INFO [ NOT SUPPORTED ], 02 MONITOR TEST [ NOT SUPPORTED ], LIVE DATA [ LINKIN ERROR, also can not get the MIL STATUS to show on [ it is in OFF ] I have unplugged and plugged in several time the 16 pin cavity connector and each time turn ignition off wait 10 seconds. STILL nothing...……….I am thinking I have a bad one.

The Chinese ones are really hit or miss now that they've come way down in price. I got lucky on mine, but I know of a handful of people who have had issues. Contact the seller and see if they can make it right. Most of them are decent. ****, I got mine on Aliexpress and it was shipped from China to my door in 4 days.

I will agree that if all you care about is reading/clearing DTCs, you can't go wrong with Torque. The Tech2 is one of those tools you rarely actually need, but if you do need it, you NEED it.
