Steering Column Noise

When I turn the steering wheel, it "hums" at me. It will do this even when the car is turned off. (Key set so steering wheel does not lock, motor not running).
Any ideas where this noise might be coming from?

Mine makes noise too - not sure it is a hummmmmm but the sound is the steering wheel plastic collar rubbing on the dash piece.

Mine has a faint "clicking" noise...I'll just live with it...unless it gets worse...

the thing that bothers me when I hear the symptom faint clicking in relation to the steering wheel is that sometimes it has turned out to be the locking pin ratcheting along - not fully engaged but not fully disengaged - this is a dangerous situation in my mind as it could finally catch (and lock) at any time.
