Default Gas Gauge problems....

I understand that the sulfur in the gas makes the gauge misread on the early C5s. My 01 has this problem but I've ignorded it and just use the trip odometer. I have heard that there is a recall for this problem. Can anyone confirm this?

Sounds like your not the only one. See yesterday's postings, there was a few replys regarding that topic. It's happened to me, but I just bought my 2001 and I am not sure what brand of gas he was using. I'll be putting only Chevron in my tank and hope this will aid in future gas related problems.

This is a common problem on the C5's. The cause is sulfer collecting on the 2 sending units in the fuel tank. There is no recall on this problem Warranty will cover this, if you still have one,, lots of labor involved here. I used the RED LINE Synthetic Fuel treatment in my tank and it solved the problem. People are also using TECHRON fuel system cleaner/additive and having success with that product also. There is also a product called RGX which comes in a very small 3 ounce bottle for $8 dollars which is very very effective but hard to find everywhere. Auto Zone in Dallas has it. Its like a TECHRON concentrate Try the additive route first, for 6-7 dollars its worth it and should fix your problem.

I went the BG44K route and it didn't help at all. Looks like I may need to exercise my extended warranty...... Does anybody think I'll have problems with a Racetronix fuel pump setup in there?

Most of our customers have not had warranty issues as the level sender has nothing to do with the pump. Most dealers welcome the warranty work.

You may unplug the Racetronix harness and tuck it away while the warranty work is being done. The level sender signal loops through purple wire in the Racetronix harness. This might confuse a dealership tech. If you have a good working relationship with the dealer tech then perhaps you can show him how to use the drainage feature to save him time?

Does anyone know of a site that lists sulfur content of gasolines sold by the common gas companies...and not too scientific? I've heard on the Forum that Shell is high and Chevron is low.

Here's one that showcases Amoco, Super America, and Holiday stations.

http://www.cleanairchoice.org/outdoo...asp#summer2003

I don't know how accurate these surveys are because as I understand it, 90% of the refined gasoline products in the US are not station specific, that is, they are transported through interstate pipelines but don't necessarily end-up at a companies distribution center. Said another way, a barrel of refined gasoline product from a Shell refinery in Louisiana may end up in a Chevron distribution center in Florida. The only indentity that most gasolines end-up with are their own additive packages put in at the distribution centers. For this, Shell and Chevron are rated "top-tier" as determined by GM, BMW, Toyota....for more info see:

http://www.toptiergasoline.com

Your best bet is to poll Corvette owners in your region for best advice on which gasolines are more gauge friendly. I can tell you that Amoco did my 01's gauge in last winter coming out of storage; this year I used Shell and I'll know in March if it creates a problem. I'm located in southeastern Michigan. Good luck.

Thank you for the tip! I'd look into a "friendly" dealer, but it doesn't sound like the newer sensors are any better in the long run. Guess, I'll look for a Chevron dealer..... Will Texaco suffice as a substitute??
