i have an ae 03 vert and would like to wake up the engine a little but not too much. ive been looking at heads and cams for awhile now and i think a picked out a set. can i get replys to let me know if this will do what i want. i dont want it to run lopey id like it to have a little over 400 hp but very street drivabe. the heads i picked out are the gm performance cnc ported ls6 heads (gm part #88958665, 10.5:1 compression) and the ls6 (gen3) camshaft (gm part # 12560950, 217/207 116). id also like to put lgm lt headers with high flow cats with my bb route 66 catback system. i have a vortex rammer already installed and would upgrade with a ported and polished throttle body. afer all mods are done ill have a dyno tune done. what do you think i can expect from these upgrades? thanx brad
I would go with a larger cam, you need to talk with some tuners to get the most from the upgrade. Also their are better flowing heads on the market such as AFR, Tea and Patriot.
havent bought any heads/cam or headers yet was planning to do later this year or next spring. saving money now for upgrade. budget should be between 5 to 6k. would like to stay with gm parts though.
i would go with the heads you mentioned above, but with a bigger cam, something like a tr220. you go with that setup with the lg's headers and exhuast system then you would be at about 450 hp. Thats about 375 rwhp.
I would definately go with a bigger cam. If you want 400 RWHP the LS6 cam is too mild to get you where you want to go. The TR224 or similar on a 114 LSA would be a nice improvment over the LS6 cam.
BTW is your car an M6 or an A4?
im sorry its a mn6. who makes the tr224 114. or what would be the best cam to use. what manufacturer?
There are quite a few companies that make 224 114 LSx cams. The "TR224" specifically is made by Thunder Racing (TR) (http://www.thunderracing.com) and is available in various LBAs (112, 114, etc). Comp Cams, Futural Motorsports (sp?), Crane Cams, and a few others make comparable cams.
My vote however, swayed by popular opinion and driving impressions, goes to the Thunder Racing TR224 112. Respectfully, you can't go wrong with any of them. Just make sure you do enough research and ask questions.
Regardless of the cam manufacturer, just make sure you set aside $400-$500 to have a quality shop tune your car after the cam installation. The tuning makes a *HUGE* difference in idle quality and drivability, especially on larger duration cams!
