Brought our car ('02/6sp) into the dealership yesterday for the dreaded column steering lock recall...I know...I know...get the CLB and get it out of the dealership...already ordered Need some advice, the dealer would like to replace the column steering lock solenoid. I've read every CL issue on the forum I couldn't find any details on this solenoid ever causing a problem. Any reason why I shouldn't let them change the solenoid (solenoid won't be in until tomorrow)? Ordered a CLB yesterday, so as soon as I get her back...it's going in. Just want to be smart as to whether we should let them mess w/this solenoid. There were no problems/codes going into the dealership...just following the notice. They're following the service bulletin for manuals to a T and won't budge on bypassing. Many thanks for your input.
I don't have any first hand experience with this device, but a guy posted several years ago that it is a small dc motor with a pinion gear on its shaft that dives a rack connected to the locking lug; in other words, it is not a solenoid. He went to say that dc motors have problems with their brushes when they always stop at the same place, as does this device. This whole problem could merely be a bad electrical contact with the brushes when the column is locked. This same situation occasionaly happens with starter motors on a lot of cars after a few years. Some guys will carry around a hammer or heavy steel rod to tap their started motor if the car won't start. A few wacks, turn the key again, and off you go.
I must say I am surprised. I have an 02 6sp and had terrible problems with the column. Would not unlock one day but would be alright the next. Had it to the dealer 3 times but as it was functioning when at the dealer they would not replace. They would do nothing until finally it stayed locked and was flat bedded in. At that time they replaced the solenoid and the following day I ordered the clb. I understand the job would cost $700.00 to have done after warranty. I would let them replace it and then get the clb.

there is no column lock solenoid unless you are referring to the column lock motor with locking pin. Please review other posts as there is ample information available to you on this forum regarding this problem.

Hi, Try and tell the dealer to put in Harness K and take out the plate like on the automatics. Let him know you'll pay for Harness K. But don't pay for a new CL motor. It's warranty. If the dealer gives you trouble call Chevrolet right away. 800 222 1020. Good Luck. Save the Wave.>George
I have read enough on here to be aware of a problem with the column locking. How common is this and would the column lock bypass keep this from being able to become a problem? If so. I would rather install it now before I have a problem. Thanks for the knowledge.
