voltmeter fluctuations??

voltmeter fluctuations??
randomly, about once a week or so, my instrument panel will flash "change system fault" and my voltmeter will go to 12 like the alternator quit working. then sometimes it will read almost 16 and then other times its normal at around 14.2. has anyone had this problem of know what it is? thanks

Best bet would be to pull the alternator and battery out. Have them each tested at an Auto parts strore. My bet would be the regulator in the alt going bad. But testing will lead you towards the right path
