I thought I ran out of gas. The engine quit on me and my wife went to town and got 4 gallons of gas that we put in the car. It wouldn't start. I used the GM procedure for starting after running out of gas.
Had the car towed in to Chevrolet garage. The fuel pump was bad. 15,000 mi on the car. If I ran out of gas, could that have caused the fuel pump failure?

Thanks,

YES electric fuel pumps can experience failure if you run them out of gas
Ive never had an electric fuel pump go out on me, they usually will get noisy, now I have had the fuse blow or the relay go out. Ask for the bad part, never mind it's in warranty, let the dealer screw GM.
fuel pump uses fuel for cooling no fuel no cooling not good for the pump.
I was thinking those same thoughts but I wouldn't think it could have gotten that hot. I know nothing about these pumps but it's hard to believe they would be that sensitive. I wish they mounted it outside of the tank.

I knew that was true on the C4 I had, guess it still continues on in the C5 then. Probably even more of a concern because of the funky passing of fuel between tanks too. Guess I will keep mine at or above 1/4 tank.
i had an issue the other week, felt like a ditz tho, i pulled in with a rough low idle, parked on my return a day later it wouldnt start .... ?? wtf, i know it was near empty but the 'reserve fuel' had 'only just come on' ... the tell tale NOISY pump wasnt anywhere to be heard... calls to GM ardmore )losers( quoted 500 for a pump and that there was a left side pump and a right side pump (*******) - called Gene our Buddy at FredBeans - there is ONLY ONE pump (with a sender unit for the other side) - 290.00 all in.
got 4 gallons into the baby and small miracle, it must have covered the float / level / whatever as it started up and i could, THANKFULLY hear the NOISY pump again!
