Thumping sound on bumps

Thumping sound on bumps
My 98 coupe w/stock exhaust has started making a thumping sound on bumps. My first thought was exhaust system. Rear mounts with rubber inserts appear OK and I can not duplicate the sound by hitting the muffler. Is it possible the rubber is old enough to allow the tongue that's attached to the muffler to thump against the bracket? I'm thinking of just ordering new mounts. The car is tight otherwise and this bugs me. 82K miles.
We put car on a lift and inspected all bolts visually and nothing seems loose from visual inspection in suspension. Noise is definitely localized on the left rear.
