Came outside after doing lunch with some lady friends and got in my 2000 MN6 with the top down...and sure enough...that suckin column locked up. The bite was that I took it in a month ago for the fix after procrastinating for the past year or so...never happened before!
Now it acts up! I perused the forum archives so learned about the CLB for the MN6 but I guess to clear codes you've got to have a scan device?
Oh...as I backed up...car kept cutting out...now I know it was cutting fuel off. I started and returned to the parking spot. Called the tow truck, waiting about twenty minutes finally got back in and tried accessories. It unlocked just as tow truck was pulling up. Drove over the Chevy dealer and of course...service was closed. So drive it back home and still joined the Mardi Gras parade later that afternoon.
So it sounds like my best bet is to pickup a CLB and a code scanner...have I got that right?
All ya need is the CLB....that comes with everything...However, if the column is already locked, the CLB does you no good. You have to use it when its unlocked...good luck!

actually it does...you can unlock the CLB with the kit...unplug the harness and use the power cord basically a cigarette lighter adaptor with the end cut off to apply power to the CL and it will unlock..
I still can't figure out why some people wait for something to happen to their car before they decide to take action. Column lock problem????Didn't think it could happen to you, huh....Wrong....
Biggie Boy GM cam out with a CLB copy called "harness K" and then a GM recall campaign. What year did GM fix the problem, i.e. the Harness K is not installed in C5 after???2003?? 2004???

The problem was permantly fixed only for 2001 and newer A4 cars (the column lock was eliminated). The problem was never fixed for 6 speed cars. 1997 to 2000 A4 cars can have a plate and harness added by the dealer which eliminates the problem. If you have a 6 speed, the CLB is your only answer to the steering wheel lock up problem...
I had the same thing happen to my Y2K two years ago in a small remote town in Arkansas. Had to be towed many miles to get to a Chevy dealer that had a Corvette mechanic. Yeah, some of these real small dealers don't have a Vette mechanic. I was very lucky. It happened with only 230 miles left on the warranty.

Not completely true. The GM Harness K kit will work on 6 speeds as well as automatics. I installed the GM kit on my 2004 Z06, then filed a claim with GM and got reimbursed for the cost of the kit and installation of the smaller plate.

One clarification (for M6 cars)...if you install the GM harness, you either leave the Column Lock Motor disconnected or you remove the lock plate inside the steering column.
