Default Column lock CLB installation necessary?

Everyone,
I have read a few of the posts about the CLB kit we can get to fix the Column Lock problem in manual c5s. I got a letter in the mail from chevy to get it "fixed". A few questions for you all:

1)A few ppl said that the 'fix' was just flashing a new code into the cars cpu. Is this true?
2)Am i better off just installing the CLB and not taking it into a dealer?
3) And can this happen WHILE you are driving?

Btw, i have not had the column lock on me, but now am afraid of it locking while im driving.

Thanks in advance.

Get a column lock bypass, the GM fix is not sufficient for an MN6....ignore the recall.

i was looking at this website for installation procedure:
http://www.ls1howto.com/index.php?article=24

and my question is... if my steering wheel doesnt lock when i shut off the car, do i need to buy that column unlocker (powered through the cigerette lighter)?

the column unlocker (cig lighter) comes with the CLB, as well as a torx wrench, which is everything you need

thanks guys..
Do we just leave the original column lock wiring (that was coming to the wiring harness) hanging? Or should we terminate it somehow?

Have you heard of the column locking up while driving??? Sounds like a nightmare!

The clb plugs into the harness in place of the column lock. so no the wires won't be left hanging
The reprogram shuts off the fuel if the lock is locked. keeps you from driving when you can't turn the wheel, that makes it silly if you have a block installed.
what we really need is a lcok which works properly, doesn't leave people high & dry, or cost a small fortune to fix. GM is really bailing on this!

The wiring that was coming to the harness will be replaced, so does the original wire going to the lock have to be taken care of? I hope i am making sense.

Basically, the wires from column lock assembly connect up via a plug then run to your PCM, this connection is inside/beneath the steering wheel kinda behind the panel under the steering column. You unplug the lock assembly, and plug your CLB in where the column lock wires plugged in. Thats it in the simplest of terms.

You are correct that if you install an aftermarket CLB, it plugs into the harness going to the BCM, which leaves the plug to the electronic column lock actuator disconnected. You just need to tuck it away under the dash. The contacts are recessed into the connector and should not cause a problem.

If you install the GM approved Harness K kit, the harness connects to the BCM connector AND to the actuator, keeping the actuator in the circuit.

ET is right on the money. Buy a CLB and forget the recall. The recall only guarantees that you will need a tow if your BCM ever gets confused by turning off your fuel.

To satisfy your BCM, you have 3 choices:
1. Install a CLB module which you can purchase from Corvettes of Houston for $49.95 http://www.corvettesofhouston.com/
2. Build your own for less than $25 which you can see my plans at the following link: http://shelor.net/Z/CorvetteForum/Cscokd/
3. Install the (GM) "harness K". Note, do not connect the Column Lock Motor side of this harness unless you remove the locking plate in the steering column.
All three of these solutions do the same thing in that they fool the BCM. The harness going to your Column Lock Motor will be left unterminated and hanging loose.

There have been rumors of the column locking up while driving, however I am personally skeptical once I understood how the locking mechanism works.

The extra harness included with #1 that plugs into your cigarette lighter is just a way to temporarily retract the column lock pin before plugging in your CLB. I did the same thing by inserting the key, turn ignition to ON, then disconnect the Column Lock Motor harness.

I hope this helps.
