Must be a wrong quote. I was told by GM Parts direct a couple of weeks ago that you would need to purchase the whole diff to get that gear.

That has been a GM Parts typo for a long time now. The "gear" they are speaking of in that description is a sun gear for the internels of the 4L60-E transmission, not the differential. We've already been there investigating that about a year ago.
