M6: had a problem shifting into 2nd this morning - popped out of second then wouldn't go in easily when I tried again, now I can seem to downshift into first. It seems like I have to pull the shifter way left to get it in gear, wont go on 1st try but will on the second attempt.
Clutch feels normal. Any ideas? Are there any adjustments that could be needed? or could Syncros be damaged or need replacing?
not sure about your earlier problem about getting it into second but when i'm having a hard time getting into first I will put it in another gear (second) and then it goes right in to first.....
When you say trouble getting into 2nd - what did it feel like - just didn't engage? Didn't feel like it went far enough? Any apparent grinding?
Does the shifter feel loose? (like something's recently changed?) Could be a problem with the shifter itself - that'd be easy.
Could be synchros as mentioned. 1-2 synchros take a beating on the street because we all love those nice jaunts up to the speed limit...the 1-2s went out on my '01 after 17k (albeit with some abuse - I was much easier on the new ones)

popped out of gear, grinding noise, tried to get it back into 2nd, more grinding, 3rd time OK
car always downshifted into 1st real easy, I usually downshift in parking lots etc, at say 15 MPH -I have never had anything but smooth and easy downshifts, not if feels completely different (20 K on a 2000 btw)
What speed? There is no reason you should ever downshift into first gear. Even if your going 2 mph it would be difficult.
Gotta disagree, car has never had a problem downshifting when pulling into a parking lot for example...always real smooth and easy...manual says you can downshift into 1st at quite a high speed, cant remember exactly what it says, never tried it above 10-15mph

when i go over speed bumps i slow down to a crawl and put it into first from whatever gear i was in...never had any problems gettin into first doin that
Im not sure your suppose to downshift into first, The trans may be blocking you out
I think that's reverse that has the lock-out.
The owner's manual recommends shifting into 1st whenever you need to, for example after you've been driving a while, you stop, and they suggest you downshift into 1st to get going again.

Not so -- as a matter of fact, you might want to try and ease the shifter into first just as you come to a complete stop. Put some pressure on the shifter below about 3-5 mph as you stop, and notice how smoothly it goes into first.
Every driving school teaches that, and every one of the new sequential gear shift boxes will, in auto mode, downshift into first while the car is still rolling. That's the whole point -- it's easier to get into first while you're still rolling a bit.
And, oh, I've got about 300,000 miles of manual transmission driving, and have yet to replace either a clutch, or a syncro. I know what works.
