My 2003 top has spent all but 3 days under my bed since new. I have some small stress cracks or spidering on the passenger side at the edge. Took it to the dealer and denied warranty claim.
Mine did it too. It's the clear coat on the plexiglass that peels.
Junk
I was speaking to the owner of KEWL AUTO and he mentioned that they were trying to come up with a fix for the clearcoat issue. He said the problem was exactly that ... the clearcoat fouls up on the top of the glass top. My car's been in the dealer shop since I bought it so I can't take a pic for the fella that knows the engineers, but I hope someone else will. I'll do so when I get the car back. Also, I know there's a picture in a thread somewhere because someone sent one to me to see if it was the same prob I was experiencing.
yep - my 97 glass top doing same thing. Also happened to my '91 several years ago to the point where the clear coat peeled off most of it. Very common (unfortunately)
I just took delivery of a 2000 coupe and the dealer did everything possible to conceal the issue with the roof (keeping the roof dirty so it all looked the same as the 'nonflaw', showing me the car inside the dimly lit shop, etc.) It was only on the day of delivery when the car was cleaned that I noticed it and they, JUMPED ALL OVER ME ABOUT NOT FIXING IT OR DEALING WITH IT IN ANY WAY POSSIBLE!) I took delivery anyway and then took the car to a friend that owns a Corvette restoration and repair shop. His exact words mirror yours exactly, he said "They ALL do it!". Of course GM knows about this and chooses to do nothing about it (BTW, a new GM glass roof lists at over $1200). Mine has a 2-3 inch stripe on the passenger side running front to back and also looking like someone had placed duct tape on the roof, let it heat up until it got real sticky and then slowly pulled it off leaving a raised residue. Not to mention the horrible crazing all over the roof. I had been speaking with KEWL Auto for unrelated parts and mentioned the glass roof issue (he sure knew about it, funny how GM doesn't) and he said that his organization was working to come up with a possible repair. We should raise the devil about this with GM until they make good on an obvious mistake in their manufacture of this part and the subsequent appearance degradation to our cars and high $$ replacement cost!
Mine has the same problems.
Mid America Motorworks, www.mamotorworks.com, has tops (exchange) for $800.
I'll live with mine for a while.
Norm
I see that Astrotops says they re-skin original GM frames w/ smoked glass that won't peel or haze; considering going this route when looking for glass top this summer.
They way I figure, even tho mine is crazing, webbing, etc etc it looks perfect from the outside and I just don't care that much from the inside as long as the sun comes in and I see the stars at night.....I didn't really expect plastic to be that perfect after several years in the sun.
My top has been buried in Zaino since I dropped the whitye one and put the clear one on whilke the white one was painted (it has been under the bed since).
I put a coat of #2 on when I do the car (quarterly) and #6 every wash. It stays perfect.
I got this PM yesterday from an other member and thought I'd share the humor:
"If you have GM warranty coverage now, here's a guaranteed way to have your crazed top replaced without a hassle. Find a GM dealership with a newer C5 on the lot, take it for a test drive (you and your significant other, to prevent the salesman from going with you). While on the test drive, stop by your current C5, swap tops, and then take the car back to the dealer. The dealer will not even notice. Later when he sells the car he'll just replace the top under warranty. There you go, warranty coverage for replacing your top! "
