Default Check engine light ON!!

Hey everyone, just pulled into my drive and noticed my check engine light was on (solid), but the car did not flash any codes. It's a 97 with 30K on it; it's low on gas, but don't know of any other problems. Any suggestions on what could be wrong or how to check for a possible code?
Thanks
T.J.

Is it the check engine light, or check gauges light? If it is the check gauges light, low feul would cause that to go on.

The check engine light is on. It drove home fine and before pulling into the garage I noticed the light was on.

Codes do not automatically pop up, use the info in this link to get your codes:

DTC Codes

Once you get your codes, note the PCM codes (these are whats causing the check engine light), write down the PCM codes, pay particular attention to the codes that end in a "C" or an "HC" the codes that end in an "H" are just old codes. Don't bother writing down codes that start with a "U" unless you have a bunch of them and then once in manual diagnostics you can scroll thru each module and hold the reset button for a second or 2 and the codes will erase.

If you do this and they stay gone you should be ok (atleast for the time being )

Thanks for the advice. I knew there was a way to trouble shoot, but couldn't remember how to do it. I'll check it in the morning.
Thanks again
