Default key fob wont hold program

I just bought a 98 and i cant seem to get my remote to stay programmed. I have put a new battery in it an re-done the entire programming sequence (not just a sync) and it will work for the first lock and unlock. The passive entry works too. But the next time (less than 5 mins later) the buttons are dead and the passive is dead. I cleaned the grease from the contacts of the battery studs and its still the same thing. Repeat the process, works again for the first one, then dead again. Is it possible i have the fob for a different year? I couldent find any answers in pervious posts and was wondering if any of you guys could help out a noob who just got his car.

I just had the same problem! The FOB did not work this morning, but after I used the key and entered the car, it worked normally. When I got to the store, it still work but did not work when I came out! As soon as opened the door with the key, it worked again! I think it is some kind of security setting, but don't know how to fix it yet! Hope someone chime in soon.

after playing with it for over 2 hours, im starting to think its a power issue to the fob. First of all, it always takes over 30 seconds of holding the buttons before it programs, and second, sometimes it wont do it at all, no matter how long you hold them. anyone have anymore ideas?

I had similar problems with the fob on my '98. Bought a new fob, replaced the batteries in the old fob, but nothing corrected the problems until I took it in for the GM CL recall. The recall procedure includes a reflash of the computer (whatever that means), and both my fobs have worked properly ever since.

The memory on my '04 is intermittant. It works sometimes, and sometimes it doesn't. The dealer says that it wasn't programmed. They programmed the remote.

It still works intermittantly.

I had the same problem when I bought my 99 coupe in November. I went back to the dealer and they got me two new fobs (for free ). That fixed the problem.

well, i will see if i can get my dealer to replace it. i think the fob is bad. however, i cant be 100% sure, because it might be the receiver. For some crazy reason, mine dosent have the tire pressure sensors in any of the tires (WTF?). They all have plain jane rubber valve stems and the DIC always shows "Svc Tire Monitor" so i cant test the receiver. But i would agree with the fob being the culprit. thanks for the help guys.
