Rearend (diff) whine.

Makes a whine sound while coasting, with slight gas pedal...this is new, started it on the way home last night....WTF?

I think I will change the gear lube & add friction modifier & see.

UPDATE:

Today I changed the fluid & added friction modifier, and I still get the noise.
Say you are going 40 mph...let off the gass......barely touch the gas & it has the whine sound & as you go to stop....it will also do it at about 10 mph as you coast to stop....does not sound very good, or normal.
HELP!

There is usually no coming back from a whining differential.

Damn IMQUIK, what a bummer. Made me sick after I read this. And after you ran that pair of 12.3s last week too. Is it a Getrag 3.73 unit or was it rebuilt to 3.73 from a 3.15 or 3.42 case?

I ask because this was one of the reasons why I went with 3.42s.

You are going to have to have it rebuilt. It will only get worse from here. Where did you get the unit from? It may still be under warrenty. Kaley

Sorry to hear this, Tom.

Your rear is toast. A rebuild is the only way to rectify this. We had to do another guy's over because of the same symptom.

dont jump to conclusions quite yet> Does it do it in neutral too? Could be the trans too. They will do this when very low on fluid.

lube king? Well things can be overlooked. Ive been around the block a few times now and just recently I ran w/o trans fluid somehow. So if i can do it, anyone can do it.
