Howdy! I was reading in the May edition of Corvette Magazine how 99-02 Vettes use a lot of oil because of ring failure. How common is this? If I decide to get a C-5 this summer,I want to know what to stay away from. Thanks for the help.
Except for the Z06, rings were changed in the third week of production in 02 according to what I have read. Z06 got them right at the start of 02 production. So unless you are looking at a very early 02 car, this shouldn't be an issue.
It's not ring "failure" and it's only on 2001 vehicles. They have a lower tension oil control ring and that can allow excessive consuption when driven hard. There is a re-ring under warranty for vehicles that "pass" the oil consumption test. They upgrade the piston rings to the 2002 spec with a higher tension control ring and a re-designed "napier" designe scraper ring.

Tom Jumper (Dealer) did mine. Made a world of difference in oil consumption.....
as I am in the oil consumption test myself right now. I want my rings replaced under warranty while I still can. The last long term spirited driving that I did resulted in a scalded lifter and bad cam. All replaced under warranty. I don't want that to reoccur.
