My dad has a 96 RT/10. If you want pure power the Viper is the way to go. It is a great car for straight line driving/scaring yourself, but as far as handling, comfort and options, Corvette has it beat hands down IMO. They both have there qualtities so it depends on what you are looking for. If you can afford both like him, thats great, but the decision for me was easy...Corvette.
I always thought of a Viper as a modern day AC Cobra. Sure it's ~$70-80k, but so is a Cobra built that's built just as well, and even the Cobra won't perform as well. For either car, I could care less if it's loud, rattles, has no storage space, hood vibrates...all I'd care is that it could light them tires up like a ****. It's a lot of money, but if I ever build a kit car, I'll probably spend as much money or more before I finished. For a daily driver, the Corvette is tough to beat, and the aftermarket makes it even better with little to no compromise....except for the lighter wallet of course!
I've rented 2 Viper's, the first was a '96 white with blue stripes in Vegas in '96. That car had a kit car interior but was the most fun I ever had in a car, driving anyway, I was only 24. As for hard to handle I did'nt find it to be that bad I never spun it out or lost control at all. Mostly because I don't think I ever reached the full potential of the car. But last year my wife and I rented a 2003 Viper SRT10 and all I can say is wow, that car had so much power it was unbelievable and it was not hard to control, even my wife had no problems. Granted we were on the street and did'nt want to kill ourselves. We gave rides to some friends and the first word out of them was the same every time f*%&. Overall though I would rather have a Vette for everyday driving, comfort and ease of everything. But there is nothing like a Viper, it is the muscle car of muscle cars with no excuses and no driving aids to help you out of your mistakes. If I knew how to upload video I'd post some of me doing donuts in a parking lot. But that's just my 2 cents and my heart still lies with the Vette.
Nice purchase, but if you ever feel like getting rid of you C5 let me know
Not a chance, Darkness!! Especially after Shirl gets done with it. We picked out a custom color for it that will look very nice with the ACI High Rise hood and chin spoiler. Shirl's new 436 solid roller should make GOBS of power with the new Speed Density tuning I've been trying to perfect lately. I am also tossing out all the previous nitrous stuff and starting from scratch with a totally custom direct port fed from a stand-alone fuel cell and pump system. This way I can feed the race gas through on big shots.
Nope, if any car goes, it'd be the Viper. But, I think I can manage to hold onto both!! Heck, I need something to drive while I am working on the vette!!
I can tell you that you dont even need the 427 to surpass the Viper. I'm a C5 performance tuner and am very in touch with what kind of perf gains one can expect from varying levels of mods. Now having the Viper I can say that a well-tuned heads/cam package will SMOLDER the Viper on the straights, let alone the twisties. As far as tubs go, YES, definitely. This is where I feel the C5 lacks considerably is wheel well room. I really like the fat tires under my C5 (and Viper). Definitely do the tubbing.
bring it (the $$) to me, I'll help you figure it out!!
