Default Z06 air box mod complete...

First I must point out that a stock 97 airbox has ABSOLUTELY no opening in the front what-so-ever! I found that to be odd as I have seen pix from other year C5's having ever so small of an opening...?

Any way, after removing the lid and plopping in my K&N filter along with aligning the box I was finished in 30 minutes (this included cleaning the front of the radiator shroud) well my first impressions are that the throttle response is noticable...and I can hear the engine taking a deep breath now...I have yet to get on it- but I assume even though I may not get massive amounts of HP with this mod...I notice her breating A LOT better now...

Just thought I'd pass on my experience...finding no opening in the stock lid was still something I did not expect!

yep, there was no front opening. The 2001 Z06 got an opening, then the 2002 Z06 got an even bigger opening.

I got lucky and got one with the larger opening like the 2002 you have pictured...gotta go out and take it for a spin to check the SOTP factor...

Did you have to remove the whole air box assembly or can you get the lid off alone?

Tim, My '04 non Z06 had a lid that looked like the small opening Z06. Chia, I popped the entire box out when I put the new Z06 lid on.

I pulled the entire box out- simply unplug the two connections (wire connections) and loosen the big clamp around the throttle body and there were 4 rubber gromets that pulled right out- 2 on the air bridge and 2 in the front of the box itself by the nose of the car.

I just got back from a drive- I can really tell a major improvement in throttle response...and I had a slight rough idle...it seems to be gone now??? there is no hesitation that I felt before like the car was sucking against a solid plastic shroud...why they didn't do this from the git go I have no idea! well worth the time and $$ spent on this mod!

do the grommets go back in easily. It seems that once you pull them out, it would be a pain to get them back in. Thanks for the info

actually I've heard that before. Someone responded that Chevrolet started installing the small holed one in the LS1 C5's.

I'll do some checking as to when that was supposed to have taken place.

My 02 LS1 built Oct. 4, 2001 had the air box with the small opening. I replaced it with an 02 Z06 air box with the large opening in Nov. 01.

Red Vert 02, thanks. I'll have to look at my original lid. My LS1 2002 was built July 2001.

This might be a dumb question but If the air box is sealed where does air come in from?

Not dumb at all!

What everyone forgets is that there is about 10 sq. in. of intake opening Underneath, that is, on the Bottom side of the air box.

The little openings on the top side are Not alll there is!
