My O4 - LS1 has a periodic knock at low rpm. Seems to be worse after driving a while and then down shifting. Tried adding Lucas to the gas and this seemed to help, but still hearing it sometimes. Did notice when I hear it and rev it up a little it seems to go away....any suggestions?
This is not a "known" or generic problem with '04s. If a gas additive helped, my guess would be bad gas. Try a couple tankfulls of Chevron or Sunoco high octane.
On the off chance that it might be lubrication related, have you checked your oil level recently, and what is your cruising oil pressure when everything is fully warmed up?
P.S. Welcome to the forum, and congrats on your first post!
I have an 02 Z06 and have NEVER expierenced KNOCK! i run my hard BUt i also take good care of the drive train (service wise) I have even used mid premimum gas in it and have not had an issue. If you TRUELY have KNOCK, your knock retard system may not be functioning properly!
Do you have any DTC codes stored in the DIC memory?
Do you have any mods done to the car?
What type and octane fule do you use?
DO you still have the factory warrenty?????
How is it running in all other aspects?
How do you drive the ?Do you "drive it like you stole it OR Take it easy and never run it hard?
You could have a really bad carbon build up on top of the pistons also.
Where are you located? Maybe another Forum member can take a look at it for you.
Thanks for the response Bill...may give me some ideas. I bought my 04 with 5000 miles on it. I have since put an enjoyable 8000 more on it.(pure stock...no mods) The car runs great and do not seem to have any other problems. I have always run either 92 or 93 octane gas, but I have bought it at cut rate stations at times. I do like to cruise slow with the top down, but I like to open it up at times also...how can you keep from it. I have not checked the DIC codes yet, but I will do this. Anything in particular I need to be looking for??? I do have warranty left but I live in a small town in Ill and the Chevy dealership kind of scratched their heads. Any further help would be much appreciated...and by the way, I'm not sure I described the "noise" correctly. Could almost be called a ping as much as a knock and I just had the oil changed....Thanks again and looking forward to further help from folks on this site...really helpful

If the sound is more like a ping, are you sure it's not valvetrain noises? I know that with mine, I thought I had a ping after installing headers, but then after a bigger cam, I realized what I had been hearing before the cam was valvetrain noise that just naturally got louder with stiffer springs and bigger cam. Not to mention the headers, when I first thought I heard "spark ping". This ping, (I thought I heard), was also at lower rpm's, and went away when I revved it up.
I have an 03 Z06 and my son has a 99 Trans Am and both motors have a noticable amount of valve train noise. The noise seems to lessen after you start driving. I have had no problems with the motors, so maybe it is just the way GM intended.
