What is the main reason for the half shaft to break. I`m thinking drag radials at the track. Could a car with under 500hp and dr`s cause the shaft to break on street pavement.
nope I have abused the hell out of mine. Brand new drag radials, full bolt ons, clutch dumps, power shifting, drifting, nothing. My rear end has been fine this is on my 01 Z06
I believe it is possible to break the output shaft with DRs and dropping the clutch. Some don't break while others under less load do break.
I am starting to drag now and went with the 4.10 gears. At that time it was easy to replace the output shaft with a better one so I did it for a few extra $$$. I felt while I was there just get it done because one good hook up and snap.
I would think the chance of breaking the shaft with street tires though is less likely to happen. This is because the tires will spin just to easily for there to be enough torque to break it. Of course if it is already week from the factory then anything is possible....
I have 430 rwhp and 395 ftlb in my 04 Z06. I have 4.10 gears and stock Z06 clutch, DTE Brace and a harden output shaft. I broke the short side output shaft using Nitto DR's with 22 psi in them with a 3000 rpm launch.
I have been using a used set of ET steet with no problem launching at 5000 rpm, since then.
This past weekend during the first pass of XTREME's Corvette Showdown I went back to the Nitto's so I could run in the True Street class. I broke again using Nitto's DR's with 22 psi and a 5000 launch. I have yet to find out what I broke but should find out this morning. I would love to keep running DR's but the two times I have tried them I have broke, so my vote is STAY AWAY FROM DR's WITH A 6-SPD.

I have the right side and left side shafts I was getting ready to throw on Ebay. Do you want to buy a right side? Or, I would suggest going with a DTE one so you don't do it again. I beefed up my diff with all the DTE stuff and launch at 5K with ET Streets and everything is great so far.
Its all in how you launch the car. Preload the suspension on your launches and let the clutch slip out real easy. Sean from MDMC ran a 9.86 on a stock rear no problem, he did replace a outputshaft for prevenative though. On slicks as well.

Sorry to hear. Did you break with the brace? How are your times? Hope its not too bad. I just broke also(trans output shaft) on a 6000 rpm launch with et streets.

Im just finding this hard to believe.... SO he broke the shafts with the DR not the ET streets?
Drag radials incorporate a much stiffer sidewall in the tire carcass to adhere to D.O.T. tire construction standards, than do the semi-slick design of an E.T. Street tire. Conversely, the E.T. street tire with its softer sidewall will/does provide greater torsional shock load absorption than the D.R. tire, hence less broken drivetrain components overall when E.T. Steet tires are used.
