Has anyone pulled a C5 engine out their car from the top? Everything I read regarding engine removal talks about lifting the body off the driveline to access the engine.
I pulled mine out the top a few weeks ago. I put the car on jack stands, took all the front bolt ons and heads off. I supported the torque tube, hooked on the the engine w/a hoist. Removed the motor mounts. You need to remove the front suspension clip so the oil pan will clear, there is no way around this I tried. Its not very hard. Remove the four upper control arm and the top shock mounts. Lower the control arm to release the spring tension. Do both sides. Then support the cross member with a floor jack. Remove the rear mounting nuts completely. Then loosen the front mounting nuts leaving about a nuts worth of threads. Lower the clip til it stops. This will give you enough room to slide it out, it is very tight though. When I put my engine back in I think I will just drop the cradle all the way instead of leaving it barely attached. It only takes a few more minutes, but then you have all the room in the world. Let me know how it goes

My car had the engine out and I will be installing it through
the top. When you removed the engine did you remove
the brake lines to the ABS unit? Any other probem areas to
look at when you are reinstalling your motor?
Thanks!
I've had mine out the top at least three times now. In each case we did take out the power steering rack, ABS unit and radiator, but left the motor together as one unit.
With the interference removed in front of the motor, the motor and front subassembly can be moved forward, then the motor parted from the subassembly (which needs to be supported on two jacks), then pulled out the top.

When you removed the ABS unit, did you remove all the
lines and remove it from the car? Or just the 4 lines toward the
motor and leave the pump hanging? ( with support )

I pulled all the lines, although you should be able to do it both ways.

I'm pretty sure we took all the lines out and pulled it out of the car, but its been over six months since the last time I did this and I'm not completely sure at this point.
