Oh sorry! missed your other question. I believe the housing is different only internally. Should bolt right up.

Hey guy's need help. I have a 98 auto vert which is in the shop getting 342's installed. This guy builds racing motor & trans but this is his first C5. He said that the 2 diff are both getrag's and they both look the same except from the front. He said something like that the 273 diff thats on my car is closed and has a lip in front and the 342 diff is open in front but will bolt up to trans. I called the forum member (TahoeC5)I bought it from and he said that he had it on his 98 auto vette and to call his mech dave at cci and talk to him about how he got it to work. But they were closed when I called. I think the guy that's putting it in is just a little spooked about the housings being different in front/ but, better safe than sorry. So, I guess what I need 2 know is---If the housing are different in the front but will bolt up 2 the trans--Will it Work. Hi Nick, I'll call ya later 2day. JOHN

My mech said that "between" the shaft hole and the lip of the 342 diff at the bottom left, there's a hole about 3in long and about 1 or 2 inches wide and you can see the ring and pinion. And that where the shaft goes into the diff, there no place for a shaft seal, just a solid plate with a hole 4 tha shaft 2 go into. Does anyone know what he's talking about or is there some kinda plate needed 2 seal the hole. JOHN

btu don't forget to tranfer over the "seal plate" from your A4 carrier to the oen removed from a manual shift. The manual shift setup doesn't use the seal plate.

and I see I didn't fully answer the original question:
are the housings the same for a4 and m6
The housings are different, exept on the one side where it bolts to the tranny... there thay are all the same.

They are interchangeable on all C5 platforms, but there are cosmetic exterior differences.
