There has been some debate over this here...I say put in the 6.5....start the car and let it run for a few minutes....let it sit for an hour and check the level.
I just read on www.corvettemechanic.com that GM has a new tech net note on oil capacity. Apparently 7 quarts is too much, believe it or not they say that 7 Qts will cause the crankshaft to stir up the oil. When you put your 7 Qts in and then check the oil after only waiting a minute or so it reads on-the-dot full because the other half quart is still up in the heads. Thats what I read...... Just did an oil change the other day with 6 1/2 quarts and after sitting for an hour plus it reads a tad over full!
Clearly some here haven't had any issues with 7 quarts, but GM says 6 1/2 for those who are picky! (and arguing over 1/2 quart is a little nit picky in itself .....)
supposed to be 6.5 quarts in my 01, unless you are racing. Then GM recommends the extra 1/2 quart. I guess they figured with all the oil consumption better to be safe than sorry.
I always put in 6-1/2 when I change it then drive it. I then let it sit overnight so there is no issue with drain down from the heads. Its consistantly a 1/2 quart low and I end up with 7 quarts. I also tip the car when I change the oil so maybe that is the extra 1/2 quart, but the only way I can get mine to the correct line is to put in 7. Unless GM thinks I should be reading the dipstick different than the owners manual, in which case they should put out some type of letter.
