When I back out of the garage into my downward sloping driveway in my '04 Z, I get this rather loud clicking/slapping noise under the right front and right side area of the chassis. Clicks basically once or twice, and then that's all. It sounds almost like someone took a stiff piece of cable and slapped it underneath the floorboards and chassis. It's definitely coming from the right side, and it only happens first thing in the morning pulling out of the garage before the car warms up. Happens EVERY day. Any ideas on this one?
Anyhow, I'm guessing my clicking noise is the plastic skin re-adjusting itself after a night's cooldown. Perhaps I'll just have to crawl underneath and see if I can duplicate the noise by tugging at things when the car is cold.
If it makes the sound when the car is in neutral and the clutch pedal is out, it is the throw out bearing making the noise. Most C5 manuals do this to some extent. You will know if that is the problem because it will go away when you depress the clutch pedal.
It's an automatic. I can't tell if maybe it's the belt. I watched it while running and every time the white part of the belt (label) comes around by the altenator, it makes this noise.
I was also watching the harmonic balancer and it wobbles a little bit on what looks to be the inner section, but the outside that the belt rides on is smooth...
