I guess when I took off the rear upper a-arm to get the shock out I dropped the suspension too much and I must have cracked/split the CV boot because today I noticed grease all inside the drivers side rear wheel.
It was only last weekend that I did the shocks so there's a good chance the CV joint is still good. On other cars I've always just replaced the half shaft when this happens. Those split boots are no good and it's umpossible to get the straps tight enough that come with the one piece boots but I'm planning on getting just the one piece boot. I guess I will need to get a socket big enough for the spindle nut.
Anyone had to do this and/or have any tips? Where is a good place for the boot other than GM?

Call around to an Axle/Drivetrain shop. There are a lot up here around Dallas. Its usually about 35-4 5 bucks to replace a boot with parts. As long as they dont have to take off the axle.
Wade, I hadn't even thought about taking it somewhere. I prefer to do everything myself if possible but for <$50 it may be worth it for something I'm not looking forward to doing myself.
Looks like I may be letting someone else do it for me. No parts places have a boot for it (NAPA, Autozone, O'Reilly) and a couple axle places quoted less to replace the boot including labor than GM wants for the boot kit itself ($65).

I don't know about the $65 - try the Forum vendors. I know Fichtner charged me in the $40's for the boot kit. If the axle places really know what they're doing, why don't you get the kit for them, so that you have the right parts (the kit includes the boot, the bands and a bottle of grease), and have them do the install for maybe $50. It should be 1.5 to 2 hours of labor if they REALLY know how to drop the half shaft in a C5.
take the shaft out and bring it to axle shop, they'll fix it for ya cheaper than you can buy boot from GM, no matter where you buy it. They do em' all day long every day. way to go. chuck

I just bought a boot kit from gmpartsdirect.com, it was around $45 with shipping. It's a special order part, took about 2 weeks from time of order to delivery. Now I just have to locate the boot clamp crimping tool.
I have a local axle shop, but I'd much rather spend the time learning to do it myself, and keep the tools for the future.

This is probably the best solution. May as well do both of them while I'm at it.
Yanked the half shaft and actually went so far as to knock off the outer part of the axle off to be able to get a new boot on but it proved very hard to get a boot from any parts place in town, incluiding the dealer.
Took the half shaft to "Pro Drive Axles" and they charged me $25 to re-grease and put a boot on.

Yep. At least one that fit. I think being an axle shop they carry a lot of commonly sized universal (not split) boots. It fit fine. I have not had any problems with it.
