I have a 2000 coupe, all standard equipment with 30K miles. Every time I start the engine I get a fairly rapid tick-tick-tick-tick sound from the engine that seems to go away after just a few minutes. Should I be worried? Is it the infamous piston slapping and, if so, is that really somehing I should worry about? I've got the GMPP warranty.
I've got the same "problem." I think it's normal but I would like to hear from someone that actually knows. I'm pretty sure most vehicles have that issue (my camaro and contour did).
Sound like coming from top-end (valves) or bottom end (inside oil pan)?
Budget, my noise seems to come from the bottom end (oil pan area). Any idea what that might be? I never thought it was piston slap, but it definitely goes away after the car is warmed up.
I sometimes get a ticking noise when I start the car from cold. Sounds to me like hydraulic lifter noise. Clears up in seconds when it occurs. Mine is a 2000. It doesn't sound like anything that needs fixing.
I had the same problem. Believe it or not, mine went away when I changed oil filters. I was running Mobil-1 or the UPF-44 filters. I have since switched to a Baldwin filter and the problem has not occured since. I found out that the filters I was using were pretty restrictive to flow, especially cold oil. You might want to get a K&N filter and try it out to see if the problem goes away. If it doesn't, then at least you are only out a few bucks and no one has messed with the motor.

Mine from bottom too; I have no idea what it is, i just noticed it (I think) when doing oil change. Even tried the Baldwin filter (B31) to no avail. I dunno...only 3600 miles on car. It may have always been there, just never noticed it before. Mine doesn't do it as much cold as it does when warm, so it sounds like it may be something completely differnt. Bottom-end noise is usually not fun if it doesn't go away. But, that's what warranty is for?

I believe you because mine did go away with a K&N and also a Mobil 1. Frankly I had forgotten I even had the problem until I read your post.

You sound more technical than me so I'm gonna hope you're right. It goes away fairly quickly after starting, maybe not seconds but within a minute or so.
Got mine online; Google "baldwin b31 oil filter" and some places should come up; or search the c5 forums for "baldwin b31" and there is a thread w/ a link to where to get online.
Sounds like a lifter waiting to get oil. definately let that puppy warm up before moving it. It's very easy and it never hurts to pull the valve covers and rockers to check those pushrods and valve train in general.
I had a lifter get turned in the lifter guide and beat silly by the cam, but with that, once it happened the noise never went away. It did sound like it was coming from the bottom when it happened though.
Keep an eye on your oil pressure at startup, idle and revs.
