Default cam only worth it?

I am looking at doing headers and a mild cam on my 04 6 speed daily driver, maybe 380-400rwhp. This is a true daily driver and only car so I have some concerns about reliability and drivability. Can someone ease my fears or advise to avoid it. This would probably cook the warranty on the engine

Thanks!

Pete

I think I just feel wasteful throwing away the warranty with only 6k miles on the car.

Thanks

unfortunaly thats the price you have to pay when going into the motor and changing things. I guess you could wait for awhile, gather plenty of information from other people and have time to decide on what exactly what you want.

If you have a shop that really knows what they are doing you will have no problems as far as daily driving. A mild cam and headers with a good dyno tune can run and idle just like stock with a litlle more rumble. The gas mileage will go down a little, but not to bad. I love my cam but have had a few problems becuase i didnt pin the crank and the crank bolt backed out on me, but besides that i have loved having a cam, and it drives and idles perfect, even with a pretty big cam like mine. I got vette doctors mail tune, did all the other stuff myself.

I am pretty close to xtreme in Phoenix which has a very good reputation so that is a big plus. I guess if the engine melts down for some reason I could just run a 427 on the ol credit card and pay it off in 2010

Thanks

2-3 cam, sounds like stock, no chop and lope, adds about 30 rwhp. It's next major mod on my '04. Unless motor melts down and they see print on the back of the cam the warranty police should not be able to tell the difference. If so, that's the price I pay!

Maybe the dealerships where you are are better or different, for my part I would never let them touch my car again. If I had a new one under warranty I would only go back for electronics/computer/sensor stuff only. I won't go into the gorey details, but no way would I let them touch my car mechanically again. It's worth every dime to have someone. even if it's a rather expensive tuner shop, you can trust and who has a reputation at stake do your work, even if it costs you like primetime. It'll save you money in the end. GM does not stand behind this car worth a damn, and the dealerships, at least in my experience think Corvette owners are cash cows who should only expect their cars to run as well as a Cavalier. Somebody stop me...

Basically trying to say, have fun with it, do it right, and you ain't missing anything on the warranty coverage... Go for it!

Personally I wouldn't consider modding your only car, but that's just me. There are easier ways to gain 30 rwhp. Air intake and long-tubes for example. JMO

Good Luck,

Mark

I was planning on doing LT headers at the same time, hoping for 400rwhp w/ headers, cam, intake, and exaust.

thanks

Do a TC and a rear end, while you won't pick up any RWHP it will feel like you have, and that is all that matters.

I am running a very mild cam with the stock headers and stock air intake on my C5 and have been very pleased with the results. It idles and drives like stock and runs 11.80's at the track.

You are running 11.8?.......... with only a mild cam?

What else have you done to your car?

LOL...I took an extended warranty out when I bought my car because I told myself that this Z was enough for me. Then, 8 months later, I proceeded to kick myself in the butt for being so stupid as to think this. Oh well...live and learn.

If you are concerned I would do the other stuff first

Headers with Xpipe, Z06 exhaust, ported throttle body, air intake and programming.

That should tide you over for a while and add a nice bit of power

400 RWHP is going to be hard to attain on a LS1 with headers and a mild cam in my opinion.

I think this is the way I am going. Start with headers and make sure I enjoy the different sound before a larger cam. The warranty lives for a few more months

Eric,
Is this the RPM XR269HR model? If so, how do you like it? I have a 2000 A4 w/3.15 gears, and am looking at this cam along with 2003 LS6 heads, Ls6 intake manifold, Ls6 injectors, Dynatech long tube headers w/high flow cats anda Vararam cold air intake. What I want is good drivability, reliability and mileage along with a substantial increase in power. I want a strong low end, mid-range and an increased top-end. In other words i want it all , in a daily driver, and thought this cam may be the one for me. Any experiences, or thoughts, you have about this cam would be greatly appreciated. BTW, I have a stock stall and was hoping not to have to change at this time...perhaps in the future.
Thanks!
