Default Help on Cam Choice PLEASE!!!

I am in Cali and so far have Dynotech headers with no mufflers in the back just straight over the axle pipes(IT IS LOUD AS HELL!!), halltech Tric,
I am thinking about getting a Cam and getting RIDD of my LT headers
(for smog and NOISE purpose)
Which cam do you guys recommend and will i get better RWHP with CAM only No HEADS, I really want to get rid of my Lts

I do ocassional HPDEs and it is a Daily driver

I do realize that i will have to get my Heads prepped for the cam ( springs, pushrod Etc)

thanks a bunch

I've heard 224/224 114 lsa is about as big as you can go. I've heard of one person going a couple degrees bigger, but that's risky IMO. It's been described like it'll drive like a normal C5/Z06, just more powerful everywhere. Any cam with those specs from Thunder Racing or TSP should be fine. FWIW, I bought my cam (torquer) from TSP.

Well, if you take off the headers, the cam won't yield anywhere near as much power as with them on... But anyway.. If your worried about smog, a 224/228 seems to be about as large as you can go and still please the cali smog *****.

Or just register a PO box in the middle of nowhere and get the no smog required..

Or put on Z06 Ti mufflers, keep the headers and get the cam and find a mod friendly smog check place. Let me know if you find one!

The above posts are right in the area. You need to call the manufacturer of the cam to determine what is the max legal setup you can run and still pass emissions. Check out futral motorsports. I spoke with them and they were very helpful (more than anywhere else) and clearly explained everything I needed to know. I also need to remain emissions legal and they recommended their F4 cam 226/226 at 114 lsa. They said that is generally the most radical you can go.

those straight up cams 224/224 do work much better with headers.
your hp may be ok but the torque will be low. a stock Z06 cam would drive better, tried it. If you keep the headers then a 224 or 226 would be great. Look more into the 224/228 cam for results without headers first.

Keep in mind if they check the smog via OBD2 (which most places do - all around here in NC) and not the sniffer test - if you have it tuned they can tune it so the vehicle displays passing results. I have already checked into this. Call a tuner for more info.

I am kinda looking for the same thing. Check out my thread.

http://forums.corvetteforum.com/show....php?t=1054255

Please let me know what you decide and how it turns out. I have decided to wait until I get my 4.10's but very curious to know the results. Thanks,

That's how they do it in New Mexico too, but here in Cali I think they're supposed to do a visual inspection as well. I just moved back three weeks ago, so I guess I'll be finding out for myself before long.

I am not affraid of the Visual inspection

I am more concerned about reliability of the cam AND I DO NOT FEEL LIKE PUTTING MONEY INTO HEADS, i rather wait till my motor blows to get something bigger (408 iron block stroker in mind)

i do have 3.90s and will be doing install of the cam myself

anyone else with a cam here in cali??

Corvette shops around here confuse the hell out of me and ANDY is to far to drive LAPD i dont trust

thanks

Heh, my cam is still in the box, but the cam and I are both in Cali! I'm waiting for additional funds so I can install it with a bunch of other things, only problem is that as time goes on, the list grows! I hate to tickle the mod bug, but it'd be a prime time to lay down the radiator and install a two-piece timing cover so you can more easily swap cams in the future.

The TR 224-114 seems to be the most common cam of choice. I am also looking into a cam in the near future, I have to deal with the smog issue of CA as well.

How well would the TR 224 work with my setup:

LT's, X-Pipe, Borla, LS6 Intake, VaraRam, NX 150 Wet Shot, HP Tuners. M6 with 3.42's

Or would something a little bigger be alot better?

good timing for this thread. i'm about to pull the trigger on this myself next week.
i need to make a choice between Andy's suggestion: 224/224 .581 114

or LPE's suggestion: 207/220 .571/.578 118.5

both are claiming about the same results out of their suggestions.

Andy's cam will make a ton more power but I don't know about emissions.
bet Andy does

well, it's not really andy's cam, it's an off the shelf comp cam that andy is recommending. he says it will pass the sniffer.

LPE is recommending the cam i mentioned before, also claiming to pass emissions. they also were a bit skeptical of the comp cam passing a sniffer due to the 114 lsa.

both andy and LPE claim about the same results, as said before...i wouldn't think either of these places would lie, their reps are too high and important to them. is andy then being too conservative?

as i was about to close this i thought of one variable. i didn't think it should make much of a difference but maybe i'm wrong. both setups include each shops LS1 CNC'd head. so, does this mean that LPE's head us so much better than the one that andy uses that it compensates for the weaker cam??

just speculating here and trying to figure out the diffs. hope nobody takes it the wrong way.

i wish andy or someone from LPE could chime in on the diffs....but then we'd probably think they were being biased towards their own product

I would consider a 220/224 114, If you in California, call A&A and he has them in stock
