Default Harmonic balancer/Pulley Separated

So I was working late at the shop Friday night and finally around 4 am we decided to leave, went to crank my car to let it warm up a bit and it acted normal for about 5 seconds and then started making a very faint strange noise so listened for a second or two then all hell broke loose with a god awful sound and belts burning. Turned the car off and went to inspect the problem and the ring of the Harmonic Balancer had separated and worked its way back towards the engine. Well luckily we hade a couple of ASP pulleys in stock so Saturday night after picking up a couple of belts we started in on it. Once we got it apart it turns out that the god awful sound I heard was the pulley ring actually eating away at the Front cover and oil pan. It only made a small indention so I am not worried about it now just glad it did not run longer. I wish I would have gotten a few pics of the damage but we were in a rush trying to get it done for the track that Sunday. I did get a few pics of the pulley though they are at the bottom. Has anyone experienced this before? I have had balancers come apart before but I don't see much about that on here. Anyways all is good now, just thought I would share my story.

The pulleys are all too common of a problem with these cars. And it appears it is also still a problem on the C6's.
Glad you caught yours early. As they can destroy an engine when they fail if left too long.
