What options are available for replacing an input shaft in a '99 vette?
Any website or contacts you can point me to would be greatly appreciated.
Background: 1999, 422/supercharged, 6-speed with RAM clutch.
I twisted my driveshaft. I had used stronger aluminum couplers, but too much torque and my driveshaft twisted. Able to salvage the torque tube. I now have a new carbon fiber drive shaft (thanks LG), new aluminum couplers (the old ones looked fine but I wont take a chance). Rest of the upgaded drive train remains fine.
Problem: the input shaft splines look to me to be worn and twisted as well. I want to replace the input shaft. GM tells me they sell the input shafts for 01-04, but not 97-03 (mines 99), and that I'd have to buy the whole assembly (torque tube and all) to get it for my 99. GM told me the input shaft for the 01-04 will not work on 97-03.
LG or anyone else with some thoughts on this??
If I can't track one down I'll have to order the whole assembly and spend the extra $.
Jackal -- tuner did use 2 aluminum couplers with the aluminum shaft. Didn't have clearance issues to my knowledge. I did not notice unusual transmitted vibration. My car is so loud I would probably never notice additional noise if it was present. With the new carbon fiber shaft I have 2 aluminum couplers on hand, and have a new rubber one just in case. I'll see how it works out with the LGM carbon fiber shaft. I think the carbon fiber driveshaft is the key upgrade, and I could likely get by fine with one aluminum and one rubber coupler. Had you heard a specific reason why you shouldn't or couldn't use two aluminum couplers aside from noise or vibration?
Runamuk -- thanks for the contact!! Had someone call today and Rodney said he had what we needed. Thanks again.
I know that LG has specifically said not to use two aluminum couplers. You may want to reconsider and or at least talk to LG about it. I ordered two polyurethane couplers from http://www.lamarwaldenautomotive.com/. You might want to consider this also, or one aluminum and one poly coupler.
