When I traded my A4 coupe for a MN6 vert just over a month ago, I had my Corsa Indy Pace exhaust swapped over to the vert.
With the A4, when I slowed the car down, there didn't seem to be any significant noise coming out of the exhaust. Just seemed to have a nice rumble.
With the MN6, it almost sounds like the car backfires a bit when it is decelerating (under engine compression; not from stepping on the brakes). It is a rather sharp sound, gets less loud as the engine returns to near idle, but doesn't sound like a normal backfire that we have all heard from cars from time to time.
Is this normal for a MN6 or do you think something might be wrong engine-wise?
"Bacckfiring" or "popping" is common with the aftermarket exhaust systems in these cars due to the improved flow. Replacing the factory "H" pipe with an x-pipe helps a little but I've had the backfiring from Corsa, B&B and GHL in our '99 MN6 coupe. Had to go back to a Z06 system to eliminate it. We have a B&B RT66 system with corsa x-pipe on our '02 A4 convertible and no backfiring or popping.
OK, then this sounds pretty normal. I have an X-pipe. I may be noticing it more because I running with the vert's top down most of the time.
Thanks, gang!
It's completely normal. You don't have that behavior with an automatic because (unless forcably downshifted to a lower gear) the inherent design prevents the transmission from performing engine-assisted braking.
Either push in the clutch or downshift to lower gears when the engine RPMs drop to near idle (~1000rpm). Then you won't hear it any longer. I only use engine breaking when I want to "sound" my triumph of glory to losing opponents. And the Quad Borla Stingers and LGM LTs do that VERY nicely.

I have a A4 with OEM h-pipe and Borla Stingers, and I don't here any popping, in fact when slowing down, I will hear a slow low rumble. But I guess that's what nwdanner had mentioned already, will be getting an X-pipe soon , most likely mid to late summer.
I've got lt's, an x-pipe, high flow cats and Borla stingers on my A4 and I can make it pop by downshifting but it won't usually do it under normal driving conditions. The x-pipe did help to tone it down.
