I was driving yesteday on normal conditions (60F) and was shifting from 4th to 5th at like 40-50 mph and it almost went into reverse. It just grinded bad (the clutch was still at the floor). I thought what the hell whats wrong with 5th and notived it was reverse. Now that lockout is gone, all the time. I can get in thier when ever now. I don't know what to do. I did not shift hard into 5th anytime i can remember. It's a 2000 FRC with w/43k. M6. Thanks in advance.
By default the reverse solenoid is in the position to stop you from going into reverse, if anything it must be stuck or something broke, ect. for it to be doing what you describe.
I know this because I forgot to hook it back up when I changed the clutch in my car and couldn't get it into reverse without some crazy effort...
edit: the wiring for the reverse lockout is on the top of the tranny, cags is on the side
Yep, could be the R lockout solenoid- I had this happen to me, replaced the solenoid and that didn't fix it... Its really easy to find and you can do it on the floor of your garage without too much issue.
For me, it turned out a wiring harness near my PCM was loose or in the harness a wire was not making contact. I dealt with a local tuner for a while and then finally ended up having to go to a dealer. Of all things, the dealer tech found the wiring was loose, in the first 30 minutes of looking...and sent me on my way with a bill for $60....Wish they were all that easy.

How hard are you pushing the shift lever over? The lock out is designed to be overridden so if the solenoid fails you still can get the car into reverse. It is spring loaded so if you push hard enough you can overcome the spring and put the car into reverse.

You raise a valid point, but having been locked out of R by this solenoid, I know the amount of effort it takes to push that Spring to over ride the lock out. I would have to believe that nobody is going to do it accidentally.
Tapping R on a 4 to 5 shift on the freeway is enough for anybody to fill their drawers (ask me how I know )... seems nearly impossible for me to see it happening without failure of that solenoid.

So what do you guys think the solenoids going to cost? For now I just stay away from 5th gear and just stay in 4th or go in 6th. Thanks for all of the help sorry I took so long to reply. I was not shifting hard, just normal.
If you look up crashed 94, he had a pile of them in his shop last year. I can't remember what I paid him but it wasn't much. Anything Transmission, he'd be the man to track down.
Huh??? Now it's back. I didn't drive for a few days. But got in it today and it's fine. Thanks for the help everyone. I guess I will have to be careful incase it goes out agian
That's what I noted as my experience. Was lose wiring for me. Made contact, then hit a bad bump and it would show itself again. I bet it happens again until you can actually pinpoint the problem.
