While driving down the interstate at a steady speed (around 70mph) my car does this weird 200 rpm increase and at the same time a slight deceleration is felt. Then the rpm slows back to where is was, no bump felt, then a little while later the cycle starts over again. It feels like the toque converter may be unlocking then locking back up again. It will do this in fourth gear, if I select it to third it still does it, same speed, higher rpm. I thought the torque converter only locks up in fourth??? Any help comments or information would be appreciated.
Maybe I didn't ask the question very clearly. Is this normal, has anyone else noticed this on their cars? It's quite annoying on a road trip. I'm just curious if there is a simple fix or if a trans shop will need to look at it. It's stock 1997 A4. Thanks

If you start up a grade or give your car more throttle, the converter will unlock and this is normal. If you're on a perfectly flat section of road, have the cruise control on, and your converter is constantly locking and unlocking, then that's not normal and you have a problem.
If after reading the above, you think what you are experiencing falls into the "normal" category and you find it annoying as you say, the simple solution is to just keep your transmission in 3rd which I always do unless I'm on an Interstate or other limited-access highway and traveling 65+ mph.
