Default Cracked Shock Mount

Anyone ever had one? I posted yestarday about a clicking noise comming from the rear. After some more ridding it was the front. I took the shock off on the driver side, saw a crack 180 degrees apart on the mount at the hole. Its the box looking mount on the outside of the frame, lots of spot welds in it. Looked at the manual because it's both sides, I thought I did something wrong using the bilstien supplied hardware, but it looks like I didn't. Could tons of pot holes and crappy streets cause this? I live in northern NJ, drive the Turnpike alot and Rt 80, not maintained so well. Also, is this a body shop fix, or a mechanic? Does anyone have a labor cost guessestimate; the part is 20$.

Are you discribing the rubber being broken or the acutal metal that the mount bolts to?

Are you are talking about the mounting point on the vehicle coming off?

I remeber this happened to one other member a couple of years back. I think it was neptunebill.

I had a upper rear front a-arm mount weld crack on my 2001 Z06. There were multiple spot welds and the upper welds had cracked and I heard a creaking noise in the rear. I had the mount welded and had them add some gussets on both sides to prevent recurrence. There was also another guy in the carribean who had the same problem.

It's the steel part that the threaded rod on the shock goes through. When looking at the upper A-arm it's that box looking piece, probably 8 inches long by about 3 inches or so wide. I only cracked it right at the hole. I wondering if I can have a steel plate welded in there instead of of a whole new mount that will eventually break again. The upper mount seems fine.

drbenne,
Has it broken since?

I have had no problems since I had the mount welded. My problem, I feel, was an inadequately welded part rather than a part failure. I, like you, was worried that it might recur which is why I also had my welder add some gussets to both sides.
Be glad you had the inclination to search out the abnormal sound you heard.

What do you guys think of welding a steel plate on the inside, the box looking piece?

Just for my own future knowledge - who does one go to to get this type of welding repair/work done? I wouldn't know where to begin...

TIA

Or any type of shop that works on specialty cars should be able to do it.

On my E36 M3 I had a rear mount fail(commom on those cars) and I had a bmw performance shop weld in plates to correct the problem

Just remember, if you mount comes totally off make sure it is mounted in the proper location or you will have suspension geometry nightmares

I don't remember if it was Neptunebill or not, but he had a yellow car, and was located somewhere in the Bahamas. I recall that he had quite a time getting the car transported to a reputable shop...

As far as the cause, does anyone think it could have been due to the Bilstien Sport install? I used all the new hardware that came with the shocks and discarded the hardware that I took off the old shock. Any thoughts on the cause?
