what to do next
knocked hole in oil pan big as fist shut it down asap going down hwy road crew littered both lanes with coke can size chunks of asphalt it was dark didnt see it comming are they liable? do you think particals are throughout motor? what to do?

Did you shut it off asap,, with the low oil or continued to run. If you shut it down immediately you should be able to get by with just the pan and any other damage. If you continued to run it,, another story.
Liable.? In most states " except mine i think
" states make it unlawful to leave material on the highway. If you know for sure the construction site did it and have photos,, you could try to file a claim with them. Otherwise,, call your insurance it should be covered under compresensive. 99 Nassau Blue

Good luck on the liability issue...here on the Left Coast, Caltrans told me to kiss off when I tried to file a claim after I had a similar situation... 
I'm guessing they needed the money to pay for some illegal aliens pre-natal care bills!
