Default radar trouble

A buddy has a Passport 8500 hardwired into his '02 coupe, connected to a yellow wire that runs to nothing above the interior fuse center. It has worked fine ever since he bought the car, but suddenly stopped working. I checked the voltage across the in line fuse and found that it is dropping 2V, so I replaced it with a mini fuse holder (My passport wouldnt run on the resulting 10V, and both work fine in my car). It worked ok for a day or so, but is now blowing fuses, mostly during startup. I checked for shorts and found nothing, so I tested the current flowing through the fuse, and found it to be 18A! Thinking this was some kind of error, I tested the Voltage on that line at startup and found that it is surging to 18V before settling to 12V.

My three questions are :

-What is this wire? (the guy he bought the car from did the original install)

- Is the voltage surge normal for this car?

- Anyone else had this type of problem?

Rudy I would do away with that wiring configuration. That voltage spike may be your alternator putting some voltage back in your battery. may want to check the battery and replace if neccessary, just my .02 cents. A lot of members of the forum hard wire their detectors to the reveiw mirror with Quick connector mirror wiring harness. E-mail: Cary Gerber; teambiker@yahoo.com. As he makes the quick connectors for $12.50. This is the best way to wire the 8500.

yeah, that was my plan when i get my own Z. I think ill try that tormorrow and see how it does..
