Default Rant: Bad Oil Pressure Sensor- GM may replace...

When I got my 99 the first thing I noticed was that my oil pressure always read a steady 80 (analog gauge). After reading some (OK, a lot) of threads about defective OP sending units I decided to order a replacement from GM-PartsDirect. I installed the sensor last weekend, after resetting some trouble codes it didn't seem like the new sensor was any better than the old one.

I took the car for a ride and noticed that after warming up the gauge would intermittently go from 80 to 0 and back, setting a trouble code along the way. One thing I noticed was that the old sensor had a brass base and the new one looked like aluminum or something. Don't know if that makes a difference or what.

Anywho, I notified GM-PartsDirect that I got a bad sensor, and received an email today to go to the nearest GM service center to work out the exchange. Let's see if the new sensor is any better than the last. I hope I don't end up being an intake removal/installation expert when this is over.

Muncie,
How long did it take you to remove and replace your oil pressure sensor? I have the same problem on my 98. I bought a non-GM replacment part and was thinking of doing it myself. I called the dealership and they said the book estimated labor at 2.1 hrs.
Thanks...

Being my first time around I fumbled for a bit, but got it done in about 2 hours. Once you know what you are doing it should take about an hour or less. Basically all you do is disconnect the injectors, unbolt the intake, and remove some hoses. Some of the hoses are hard to see/get at.

You don't even have to disconnect the fuel line unless you just want to. I've been using a PS-308 that I bought from RockAuto.com over a year ago with no problems. Be sure to pay close attention to the vacuum lines on the rear when you are re-installing the manifold. Especially the little 1/8" black nylon line. It's easy to leave disconnected unless your careful. HTH
