Default Cam only?

Now that I have mod fever, I'm planning my next two or three improvements. I'm interested in a cam after my headers are done, but don't really want to go with heads yet. What cam will give me good streetability with stock heads? I don't mind a lope at idle, but don't want stalling or vacuum problems. I'm running a 6 spd with 4.10's. Vararam going on next week, and probably Kooks 1 3/4 LT's to go with my Borla cat backs.

I thought emissions standards in Jersey were pretty strict. I think that is about your only limitation. I live in MA and have been debating about going with a cam only setup myself. I spoke with a number of vendors including LG, futral, and thunder racing. Futral gave me the most comprehensive advice so if I was to go with a cam only setup I would probably go through them. About the most radical I could go and maintain emissions standards would be a 226/226 114lsa, which is good for about 45rwhp. If emissions are no concern, the LG G5X3 is one heck of a cam setup. With this cam only you could definitely put down 400 at the wheels (60-70rwhp from the cam).

Ed, I have a Cartek 2x cam that is proven to run great on strip and street. It is perfectly streetable and would go well with 4.10 gears. I also have springs to go with it that are rated to 600 lift.I'll give you great deal if your interested. I also live in Central Jersey so there would be no shipping issues.

Those numbers seem a bit inflated.( 70 rwhp from just a cam?)

With a tune you wont be too far off from those numbers. Headers, LG cam, intake, tune and you will be very close to 400rwhp. There have been a lot of posts of those acheiving these results. LG always goes for max performance although i cant tell you how streetable these cams are. I have not experienced them first hand.

There is always a dozen threads open like this on LS1Tech- Its a great resource. Go spend a few weeks just watching the internal engine LS1 section of that forum and you will see plenty of results and recommendations for off the shelf cams. There are a few guys that will also do custom grinds based on your goals. Its about impossible to not get sucked into dyno results, but try to keep real expectations and look at the area under the curve. Good drivability or street manners is a characteristic I see most often associated with any of Futral's cams and if you call them, you will get a cam recommended based on your goals. But spend a week or two as a lurker and formulate you own opinion and come up with a list of vendors and call them for feedback.

Why are you getting rid of it? I may be interested, but wasn't really looking to do this for a while. Has it been used?

My G5X2 Cam only put down 399 on a Mustang Dyno

The X2 or X3 are perfect with a 4.10, you will love it!

If you have headers it isn't 'cam only' is it? I could see 70 hp from a cam and headers with a tune.

You might also want to talk to DTE. They custom make their cams and may be able to get you exactly what you are looking for. I have been very impressed by their results to date.
