Default Need Help Deciding: Heads

I bought a 224/224 581/581--114 cam. Thinking about buying some phase 3 heads--67cc 2.08/1.60 valves. I have tpis headers/x-pipe/corsa exh/342's/underdrive pulleys/LS6 Intake/Vararam. Ive heard that these heads would be way to much for what I have. Would lose alot of bottom end power, but gain top end power. Need help deciding on these heads or something smaller(phase 2 heads maybe). T/C coming at the end of summer. JOHN

2.08 valves are too big for a 346 because of the shrouding you will get with a 3.90 bore diameter. Most stage 2 heads for a 346 have 2.02 int. and 1.57 ext. valves. If I were you I would go for a set of heads that are setup for a 346 ci engine.

So, do you think the phase 2 heads would work better or try and find something a little bet smaller.

A stage 2 type head for a 346 is what you want. Contact TEA, MTI or AFR and tell them what you're running.

I Know I guy on the forum who has a set of patriot stage 2 heads--just spent $350 having them freshed up(ready to bolt on). He's asking $1000 for the set. Matter of fact, he told me the same thing you said about shrouding with a stock bore diameter. And that the heads should be on a 408 or 427 motor. I think I'll look into buying his heads. TKS JOHN

Patroit Heads have had quality control issues, plus they aren't the best heads for producing power. If I were you I would look at heads from another source. Both MTI (stage 2 E) and TEA (Stage 1.5 heads) are budget priced heads that are better than Patroit Heads.
Forgot to mention get 5.3 heads not 5.7s.

I have that spec cam on a 112 LSA with MTI Stage 2E heads. Very nice setup and the heads are a great value.

MTI stage 2 E heads run about 1595.00, TEA stage 1.5 heads are in the same price range. If you don't have a 5.3 core figure on about $300.00 to $350.00 more. BTW TEA was running a sale on their 1.5 heads I believe they were asking $1550.00 with NO core charge.

Check the C5 parts for sale forum, you can sometimes find a good deal on a set of ported heads.

I have Patriots. I got lucky and was one of the first that had these, many had issues with theirs. Mine were OK. However, I worked with Patriot to get metal valve guides to replace the platic ones that were originally on there and caused some to experience oil leakage/blow by issues. They have been on my car 4,000 miles and I am making decent power with a 228 Cam and a 4,000 Stall TC on my A4.

386 RWHP and 419 RWTQ and ran a best in the 1/8th of 7.15 at 95.55 MPH, the 1/4 wasn't as good cause I got a bad 60', but still pulled off an 11.42 at 122.58 MPH.

Good Luck.

11.42 at 122.58 mph on bad 60'--Hate 2c #'s on a good 60'. I would love 2c those kind of #'s when I'm finished with my car. JOHN

I am the KING Just kidding. I have a pretty fast C5, there are faster, but I am not complaining.

I ran a 12.57 at 111 MPH almost stock; EMT's and the only mods were intake, exhaust (Corsa Indys) and a Powerloader, similar to Ls1 edit.

I had a good one from the factory. My buddy tuned me and is one of the best in all of Dallas., It drives like a cadilac and still will kick some azz

Good Luck......

My Patriots I just got lucky with. I bet other heads would give me even higher #'s and better times. I am just glad the thing hasn't blown up, 3-4K miles later I think I am ok
