steering rack install/ Cracked crossmember
After a pretty good Engine install, I finally had a problem.
When the steering rack was removed, I noticed something
odd on the pass. side bolt. The hole in the rack is much bigger
than the bolt that bolts the rack to the crossmember. The width
of the rack leaves almost 3/16" play, (front and rearward) where
it sits in the crossmember tabs. It almost looks like there should
be a spacer or bushing. I looked at the service manual and
it doesn't show anything. Well......when I was tightening the
rack bolt on the pass. side, the tab broke from the cross-
member. I guess I will have to get a welder to fix it.
Anyone else have this problem? Am I missing something?

For safety reasons I would not weld the crossmember. Buy a new one or a good used one from Karshop and put it in. Remember, it holds the steering rack.

Thanks, I was thinking about that. I live in an area with some
GREAT welders with lots of experience welding on aluminium and
I was planning to check with them.
