I just had a new clutch installed and afterwards the whole drivetrain seemed out of balance at 4500 RPM. The dealer is putting in a new flywheel because they resurfaced the original and think it is now the culprit.
I need to know whether or not they ruined the original by resurfacing it. It is a 1996 LT4 engine.
I heard it is a "dual mass" flywheel and should not be machined. Is that true?
Where can I go for any real documentation on this servicing? I want the "no ****" GM manual for a new clutch install. I have a Chilton manual and it is missing details about the flywheel.
I want them to pay the 800 Bucks for the new part, because I believe they shouldn't have messed with the original.
When I had my clutch replaced, I had my dual mass resurfaced. It was fine at first, but after about 150 miles the damper failed and I had a vibration above 4000 rpm.
The shop stood by their work and replaced the flywheel without charging me any more labor, just parts.
Resurfacing the flywheel is tricky and seems to be a hit or miss thing and it probably depends on how many miles and abuse it has had in life.
Dual mass flywheels should never be resurfaced!
Your dealer f**ked it up!
Now that being said it probably needed to be replaced anyway because of heat cracks or just grooves worn in it from the failed clutch.

Just wanted to clarify that the clutch was working as it should. It didn't chatter or slip at all. The problem was that it was making a " ticking " noise when the clutch pedal was put in to the floor. If the pedal was raised a 1/4" off the floor, the " ticking " disappeared. That was the only issue.
I ended up paying the cost of the flywheel. The repair seems to have been done right so far, no vibration. The actually had to re replace the clutch again because it screwed it up, hehe. I'm not happy about paying for the flywheel, especially if may have been reusable without doing anything.
So does anyone know a lawyer who will take this on pro bono for me? If I get any money back he or she can keep half.
Why keep coming back to the thread then? I just wanted anyone who may know something that may not be surfing through the C4 section to catch a glimse and maybe help me out. Heaven forbid you could be nice.
