Does anyone know if ALL C5s are pre-wired for the remote CD changer? My car didn't come with one and I just picked up a used factory unit so need to know if I need a wiring harness. Are there any install instructions available? Thanks.

I don't have the answers you're looking for. Just want to let you know a lot of us cannot use burned CD's. Won't play and I have tried several units at dealerships.
If I did it over again I would get a different unit and have it installed. Players in my other vehicles work fine.
I've never had a problem with the CDs I've burned in any of my vehicles. Could be the software you used to burn yours.
Hundreds of us can't be wrong. There are exceptions. Don't say I didn't try to tell ya. Hope yours works. Most don't.
Take a burned CD to a dealership and try it in various Corvettes. Take several. Burn them with all kinds of software and use different kinds of discs and at different speeds. That's what I did.
And guess what. They play fine in my other vehicles. I'm just trying to save you a lot of aggrevation.
Harness #1 goes from the head unit to the passegner footwell. Harness #2 goes from the passenger footwell to the rear storage compartment (where the CD changer is mounted).
If the C5 was ordered without the CD changer option, harness #2 was not installed at the factory.
And there were reports of 1997 and some early 1998's that didn't have harness #1 either.

Burned CD's work perfect in my CD changer. I just had to burn them at a slow speed.
The software seems to make a difference in my stock CD changer. Media Player burns have a lot of static whereas CD Now seems to produce better quality, although still not as good as a commercial CD. The best "burned" CDs were actually ones I made on an earlier CD recorder/player that "finalized" the CD after recording. I've not had a burned CD not play in either my stock 12 CD changer or the stock CD player in the head unit.

Bob,
I'm not doubting what you're saying and I appreciate your input, All I'm saying is that I've owned five C5s since '98, including the '02 and '00 we have now and haven't had any problems playing the CDs I burned.

Mike,
Thanks for the install instructions.
I am just trying to give you my experience with these units. And I have gone to the dealers and tried several different ones. I tried to get them to replace mine under warranty. It seems to be an alignment problem with the head. Do a search. There have been many threads on this subject over the years.
I'm just saying I would not go to the work and cost of installing this unit. I have a Sony 12 disc changer that works great and never has had a problem.
I have also have the Ford 6 disc changer and never had a problem. I'm still under warranty. If enough guys post no problems you know where I'm headed.
I've got the 12-disc, 1996 vintage; a 12-disc 2004 vintage and a 1993 vintage single disc player. Each in a different car. I have no problems playing computer burned (some generic CD burner software delivered w/XP in 2002 or early '03) CDs in any of them.
If you have a Z06, there is NOT any cables installed for the 12 disc. i had to get one through one of the supporting vendors. In the passengers foot well, there are two connectors. One is easy to find and the other one (small connector) wa taped to the wiring harness.
Here are some pictures of the connectors.

I've tried everything but backwards. Discs, recording speed and software. Then I took them to a Vette dealer and tried several Corvettes (new) and they wouldn't play them either. The dealer then contacted Panosonic (I think) and they said they would not play burned CD's.
Several guys have posted it's a head alignment problem.

Looks like I'm going back to the dealer and get a new one installed.
Yeah, but you're not "hundreds." If it's your experience, say so, but don't include the rest of us. Mine plays burned CDs fine.
Before you start in on me pilot, do a search. You need me to do it for you? I said "over the years". Go to the search function, then do an advanced search. OK?
I have "Hundreds of Burned CD's" and not had one fail to work in my remote player or head unit. Bob- yours appears to be abnormal. Vettedude- good luck with the install. Doug

I have heard this quite often. It seems to be hit or miss. Before I tried my first ever PC burnt audio CD, I searched a lot of GM car forums. I learned the overall Keys to success are to:
a) never use blank media that the painted side is "silver". The ones that have either gold or black on the one side seem to always work better.
b) use 700mb (750mb ???)media if at all possibble. Some of the 800 and 850mb media don't seem to play well in GM CD players. Keep in mind that these players we're now just using in our new Corvettes were designed 7 years ago - long before some of the newest media was even available.
c) regardless of your CD burners top speed, burn these specific CD compilations @ 6x or 8x... no faster.
I followed these guidelines from the beginning and have never had a problem. But since I never swayed from these guidelines - I can't say for certain that they were responsible for my success either.
