Ok, I just bought an aftermarket shift **** for my 6-speed....now whats the trick to getting the stock **** off? I assume you have to remove the metal plug under the top cap before it will unscrew...but how?
Once you have removed the plastic cap that has the shift pattern on it, get a pair of Channel-Lock pliers. Grab the top of the metal wedge with the Channel-Lock pliers and slower wiggle the metal wedge side-to-side as you pull up on it. If you have a good set of pliers it should slow come out.
After the metal wedge is out you can unscrew the shift ****.
I used that method...worked fine...but be gentle as you put pressure on the screwdriver...don't force it or you may break the demon key! I removed my roof panel just in case
I used the pry-it-up-with-screwdriver method. Worked really well. Though I had to use the side of the stock **** for a lot of leverage I did not damage or distort it.
Once I removed the key I used a dremel to file its sides down just enough for two reasons; 1) so the next time and the next time, and the next time I want to remove it it'll come out easier. And, 2) because I drilled through the top of the stock **** so I could screw it down further on the shaft (effectively lowering it).
Then after screwing the **** down to where 5 threads of the shaft were exposed the problem became the key sat up too high to snap the 1-6 cap back on. So, I filed the key's sides so it would slide further down the shaft.
I used needle nose vice grip pliers to get my pin out. Removing the roof is highly recommended. I installed a heavy titanium **** on my Ripper which made a vast difference in throw.
I used the Vise-Grip method and it worked great. I just didnt want to damage the pin either in case i want to re-install the stock ****. But my polished stainless **** looks great! Thanks for your help everyone!
