This week has sucked to say the least, first new GETRAG 3.42s are whining in vehicle, second I get my foot run over by a truck at the car wash while washing my rims, and will not my A4 is not allowing me to manually shift. 1-3 are loose, I have to drive in Neutral, and Drive is now 3rd. Can anyone give me any insight on the reason for this. Do you think it has anything to do with the install of the 3.42s?
You need to take your car back to who ever installed the rear diff, there is a cable that goes from the shifter to the transmission to select gears and it sounds like it's not hooked up right.
Also, was your PCM reprogrammed for the new gears?
Well, sounds like it's not the gears or trani as above mentioned.....good to hear, hopefully your tuner will get it right this time.
Dont' forget to reprogram your speedometer with the new gears as well, I assume your tuner would have done already though.
Good luck, hope it gets all worked out for you.

Don't let Mike Mercury hear you say that.
Changing rear-end gears does NOT affect the speedometer at all! That is a myth that needs to be squashed. The speed is read off of the transmission, not the differential.
The only thing you need to do in the PCM is "scale" the new gears. Which is simply changing the shift points so it wont bounce off of the rev-limiter.

I hate to tell you this but the speed is read off of the differential but it's read from the ring gear which is the same size no matter what gear ratio you have, this is why changing ratios will not affect your speedometer but will affect shift points on an automatic trans car.
There is an adjustment on the shift cable end that is connected to the transmission shift arm; a clip on the cable locks the setting. When the cable end is unlocked it can be moved so that Park on the shifter corresponds to Park on the transmission; once the adjustment is made the clip locks that setting. Use caution when working on the shift cable due to it's plastic construction.

Learn something new everyday huh....
I knew about the shift point, but I didn't realize you didn't have to redue the speedometer. I thought you did in the A4 for any gears over 3.15's.
Less work to do is always better.
