Ok, I am sure I am making this harder than it needs to be, but.
Bill, in one of the posts above you mentioned that I should check the resistance between the EBTCM and Chassis ground. You said that the EBTCM was located near the differential. I can't find it.

I know this is a stupid question, but I am certain that my problem is a combination of lack of knowledge and fear of not being able to fix this without visiting a dreaded dealer.

Can you please point me to the EBTCM so I can get the resistance reading?

Thanks

In the original answer, I assumed that you had a REAR MOUNTED EBTCM . My mistake!! 97 and early to mid year 98's had the EBTCM mounted in the rear. 99 to 2004 have then in the front on the drivers side in front of the engine. Just dig the meter lead into the top of the EBTCM body and then dig it into the ground lug that is directly behind the head light assembly and next to the hood prop support base.

Ok,

It looks like the resistance between the little ground wire on the module to the ground on the frame rail is .2 Thoughts????

I was outside trying to get the ground nut off so that I could clean the grounds. They do not appear corroded or dirty but I figured what the heck. Do you know what size socket fits that little thing? 11mm deep socket? 3/8? The only thing that I can fit in the small space is a socket and I can't find one that fits.

Well here we are Sunday night. The plot thickens....

Yesterday I did the resistance test as Bill requested, oddly since doing that the DTC error only set once. I cleared the message and today I finally cleaned all the under hood grounds, as well as the ones behind the rear wheels. Since then no errors.

It's also raining and I've had the opportunity to test the system. It works perfectly.

Hopefully the only problem was dirty grounds. Thanks to Bill I am back in the game.

I love this forum.

THANKS BILL

I have been chasing the same gremlin for about a year now? I have taken every ground, connection, junction off, cleaned, inspected, and greased. The code same codes keep coming back. All of the codes point to a loose connection with the BCM or the EBTCM. I gave up? I do not have active handling (thank goodness) and when the TC and ABS kick off it really does nothing to the way the car drives. (I learned how to drive before ABS). I finally pulled the bulbs on the dash so the TC and ABS light wouldn’t distract me when they come on.

It will not do it for weeks, then it never fails. I’m lining up on my 3rd-4th run at a autocross or road course then boom, TC and ABS kick off. I have even go as far as keeping a log of when and where it goes off. After a couple of months it was so random I could not trace it back to anything. I think all 97’s are like this. Mine is a 97 A4.

Why did they move the EBTCM to the front of the car after 97? This may be part of our problem?????

They probably moved it because of corrosion!!! If you look on the motor part of the EBTCM you will see a stud ground connection with two nuts. That connection gets NASTY a lot The Front mounted EBTCM did away with that connection all together and is grounded internaly.

Here is a picture of the EBTCM Ground on a NEW Frame! Compare it to one that has some miles on the car.

I have more if your interested.

Bill,

How do you get pictures that are so clear. None of my digital cameras can come close to the lighting and clarity you get.

More pics when you have time would be great

So a day and a half later and still no more codes. Your post on cleaning the grounds should really be a sticky. It helps so many of us. These cars rely on so many electrical connections, and most people would just take their cars to the shop to get simple problems fixed. I can't begin to imagine the amount of money that this FREE website has saved me.

If you took your car to the shop for that problem, they would install a $1500 EBTCM. They wouldn't even think about cleaning the grounds. The GM MOTO is: Change the BIG things first and worry about the little things later!

I LOVE IT when a plan comes together!

Thanks
