First Im sorry for opening this thread again Got the recall notice yesterday. I have a `98 coupe / auto. Do I do the recall, AND install a bypass ? I have read so many post, Im not sure whats the best. Maybe someone with the same year/model has had it done and can inlighten me. I just want to be right. Thanks
Do a search, but I think you will find with the auto you can have the recall done and skip the bypass. With the auto they disable the lock plate. Good Luck

Thanks, I JUST HATE TO THINK I HAVE TO TAKE IT TO A DEALER
After doing some searching....I bought mine used from out of state, I got a great deal, its a beautifull car and runs like a bat out of he!!. Im worried that if it had a tune by the previous owner, that it will be un done by the dealer Im at the crossroads !
HELP....can I install a bypass and NOT do the recall. Will this take care of it once and for all ? Just dont want to "dealerize" it if avoidable. This car runs too hard for just the few mods I have, I beleive a previous tune has been done and I would rather not let a dealer touch if I dont have to.
I did the by pass myself.
Used the tech tip section, which has photos and written instructions.
Took a little more than an hour.
Be very careful removing the driver's side dash panel, is all.
Buy an extra by pass unit for back up and keep it in the car.
Do everything you can yourself. Save the dealer for mission impossible. Oh, and save your $$.
I just had the recall done after the 6th lock up, never took me more than 10 minutes to unlock it, but after getting three recall notices figured I might as well get it done. Getting ready for my first long trip and damn sure dont want to be 1000 miles from home and have it lock up for good. They do reflash your pcm even with an automatic as I now have a new readout on mine. LOW VOLTAGE which I got when I went to reprogram my HypertechIII.My car had not seen a dealer since jan 2001...
I have a '98 A4 and had the GM "fix" done about 2 or 3 years ago. It works perfectly and I'm satisfied w/ the outcome. Some people have reported problems when they installed the CLB on early year ('97-'98) Vettes. I installed a CLB (C5 SOLUTIONS) a year after I got my car and never experienced any problems. Nevertheless, I elected to remove the CLB & have Chevy install the FIX. My advice---get your dealer to do the GM "fix".

You got the "old" fix. It's different now.
My opinion, go with an aftermarket CLB and steer clear of the stealership. There's been problems reported with the recall components and GM still hasn't found a proper fix.
If its an A4, give it to the dealer, they will remove the ECL. If you have an MN6, forget the dealer, all GM does is flash the PCM, doing nothing to stop the ECL, just prevents you from driving with a locked column. So with an MN6, do the CLB.

If you read some posts, I think you'll find that there is more problems after having the recall done than you want to risk having. I don't know about the 98 year Vette, but on my '99 I did the clb after having it lock up on me, and no problems 10,000 miles later! BTW, I first stopped at the GM dealer and explained to them how my column had locked and wouldn't unlock. The look on their faces reminded me of a couple deer caught in my headlights, DUH!!!
I replaced the erratic lock module with the new and improved (I hope) version. Note the C6 shifter from Ken Fichner. As long as I had the console apart......
The dealer is required by law to tell you to bring it in, since it is a published recall. If you have an auto...do it. If you have a 6 speed, it will not solve the problem, but they do reflash the PCM and if you have a previous tune, it will be wiped out. The reflash changes the firmware in segment 1 and if you do not have the flash tune saved and newer tuning software, you cannot reflash the tune.
